Student Guide | Contributions
It is important that the students at Rocklyn Academy have an opportunity to give back, to contribute, in a way that creates a feeling of ownership. It is with a growing pride that we take care of our environment. Each student will have a partner and they will check each other’s Contributions. A Prefect or Head Girl, in turn, will check these Contributions.

Dishes:

  • Rinse and load the dishwasher
  • Fill with soap and start dishwasher
  • Any pots, pans or dishes that are unable to go into the dishwasher must be washed by hand, dried and put away
  • Clean sink and drainer, and wipe around edges and the taps
  • Place dishtowels and dishcloths in their designated location after use
  • Unload the dishwasher at the end of its cycle

 Set and clear:

  • Set the tables using place mats, napkins and utensils
  • Set out condiments and beverages appropriate to the meal
  • Ensure that all tables are clear and dirty place mats are put in the laundry
  • After the meal, clear condiments and place leftovers into storage containers

 Garbage and recycling:

  • Empty kitchen receptacle every day and replace with a new garbage bag
  • Ensure that receptacle lids or containers are clean
  • Ensure that the wall surrounding the garbage receptacle is clean
  • Check kitchen counters for recycling items and place them in the blue box in the laundry room
  • If there are cans, please remove both ends with the can opener and squish them down on a carpeted area of the floor, also remove paper label
  • Ensure that the recycling and garbage storage areas are neat and tidy
  • If the blue boxes are full, place the contents of the boxes into blue garbage bags and set them in the designated storage containers outside the back door

Sweeping (after each meal):

  • After each meal, remove all chairs from the floor by stacking them on the tables or carpeted areas
  • Sweep the entire floor area (hallways and kitchen) using the broom and the dust mop
  • Place the dirt from the floor into the garbage using the dust pan

Mopping (done after the sweeping):

  • Fill a bucket with some hot water and cleaner
  • Using a mop, wash the entire floor area (hallways and kitchen)
  • Ensure that excess water is removed from the mop head before washing the floor
  • Once the floor has dried place all of the chairs neatly at the tables
  • Return the mop and bucket to the laundry room and make sure that mop head is properly rinsed
  • Empty the bucket and rinse

Wipe down (after each meal):

  • After tables have been cleared, use a damp dishcloth to wipe down all of the tables (do NOT wipe crumbs on floor)
  • Using a soapy cloth, wipe down the counters, inside the microwave and all kitchen appliances (under the stove elements, too!)
  • Vacuuming, dusting and tidying:
  • Vacuum all carpeted areas (rug in residence and carpet in the schoolhouse - NOT upstairs in the schoolhouse)
  • Vacuum under the cushions of the sofas and chairs
  • Using a damp cloth wipe off all surfaces (the top of the TV, bookshelves etc.)
  • Tidy the Common Room area and return students’ belongings to them or place them in the Lost and Found box.

Washrooms:

  • Using the shower cleaner, spray down all of the showers, shower heads and knobs
  • Tidy the Bathroom area and return students’ belongings or place them in the Lost and Found
  • Thoroughly sweep the bathroom floor, including the toilet stalls
  • Using Windex and a paper towel, clean the bathroom mirrors
  • Make sure that the bathroom counter is cleaned and free of personal items
  • Using the powder cleaner and a cloth, scrub the bathroom sinks and faucets
  • Using the toilet cleaner and toilet brush, clean the toilet bowls thoroughly
  • Using a cloth, wipe down the toilet seats, tank and the base of the toilet
  • Empty the garbage and replace with a new bag

 Laundry area:

  • Collect all dirty dishtowels and dishcloths and place them in the laundry room
  • Wash the towels if there are enough for a load
  • Ensure that the laundry room is neat and tidy
  • Using a damp cloth, wipe down the washers and dryers
  • Empty the lint traps of both dryers
  • Sweep and mop the laundry room floor
  • Clean out the laundry room sinks using an appropriate cleaner and a cloth
  • Tie and take the garbage to the outside container and replace the garbage bag

Shoe area (checked often throughout day):

  • Place the shoes and boots neatly on the shelves and boot trays and return students’ belongings or put them in the Lost and Found

Snack:

  • Assist with the preparation of snack when needed
  • Ensure that all dishes and food from the afternoon and evening snack are properly cleared away (washed and dried)
  • Wipe down counters and tidy the kitchen area
  • Ensure that all tables used during snack are free of garbage, school books and other school items

Study hall:

  • Ensure that all tables used during study are clear of all items
  • Turn off all computers and make sure that the computer area is clear and tidy
  • Straighten couches and cushions

Phone and computer room:

  • Check this area to make sure it is clear of any personal items and the floor is swept and clean
  • Place any personal belongings left in the room in the Lost and Found box or return to their rightful owners
  • Make sure the computers are shut down when not in use

Outdoor maintenance:

  • According to the season, water plants, shovel snow, etc.
  • Ensure that any garbage outside is picked up and placed into the proper receptacle
  • Stack all outside chairs neatly at the side of the residence

Van / Buses:

  • Ensure that the vehicles are free of garbage and students personal belongings
  • Clear vehicles of snow in the winter time
  • Make sure all windows in the vehicles are closed every day
  • Dust off dash board

Lights:

  • Make sure that the outside light(s) are turned out each morning and on each evening
  • Make sure that all of the bedroom lights are turned out when not in use
  • Make sure that the washroom light is turned off when not is use

 

MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS

Clean out main fridge:

  • Remove all items from the fridge
  • Dispose of items that have expired (ask Residential Staff)
  • Using a warm, damp cloth wipe out the fridge, including the drawers
  • Place all items back in the fridge
  • Wipe down the exterior of the fridge with a damp cloth

Sweep and mop kitchen floor areas and hallways:

  • Remove chairs and other items on the floor from the kitchen area
  • Thoroughly sweep the floor (using the broom and dust mop)
  • Fill a bucket with warm water and cleaner
  • Wash kitchen floor
  • After the floor has dried, place all items back in the kitchen
  • Thoroughly sweep hallways with broom and dust mop
  • Using warm water and cleaner, mop the hallways

Sweep and mop bathroom floor :

  • Thoroughly sweep the bathroom floor
  • Fill a bucket with warm water and cleaner and wash the floor

Wipe down kitchen cupboards and counters:

  • Using a mixture of warm water and cleaner, wipe down all of the kitchen cupboards
  • Wipe down dishwasher
  • Wipe down counters and appliances on the counters
  • Use paper towel or a dry cloth to dry off the cupboards

Clean windows on main floor:

  • Using Windex and paper towels clean the front door, back door, phone rooms, and laundry room windows
  • Wipe off window ledges

Clean fridge in pantry:

  • Remove all items from the fridge
  • Dispose of items that have expired (ask Residential Staff)
  • Using a warm, damp cloth wipe out the fridge, including the drawers
  • Place all items back in the fridge
  • Wipe down the exterior of the fridge with a damp cloth

Clean out vans / buses:

  • Remove any garbage or personal items from the van/bus
  • Using a broom and dust pan, sweep out the van/bus
  • Using a damp cloth wipe down the dashboard
  • Using Windex and paper towels clean all van/bus windows and mirrors
  • Clean snow off of vehicles

Wipe down chairs and tables:

  • Using a warm damp cloth wipe down all chairs in the house
  • Use a dry cloth to wipe them off after Using a damp cloth wipe down all of the tables, including table legs

Clean shoe area at the front and back door:

  • Remove all shoes from the shoe area
  • Thoroughly sweep the shoe area
  • Place all shoes neatly back in the shoe area
  • Using a damp cloth wipe down all shoe area shelves
  • Vacuum shoe area mats, or shake them outside

Clean and tidy computer area:

  • Ensure that computers are dusted and there is no garbage on the tables or on the floor and area surrounding the computers
  • Ensure that there are no personal belongings or school items on the table or around the computer area

Tidy Pantry:

  • Organize and tidy shelves, use a damp cloth to wipe down the shelves
  • Sweep floor with broom and dust mop
  • Ensure that all garbage is placed in the proper receptacle
  • Using warm water and cleaner, mop the pantry floor

Doors:

  • Using a damp cloth wipe down all bedroom doors, bathroom doors, and the front and back doors
  • Ensure that all dirt and fingerprints are removed hat the computer area is clear and tidy

Wipe out cupboards and drawers:

  • Using a damp cloth wipe out all kitchen cupboards and drawers
  • While doing this, ensure that all items are placed in the proper location, which may be different from where you found

Stove top and burners:

  • Thoroughly wipe down the exterior of the stove
  • Make sure that burners are clean and free of spilled food or other items (these can be washed in the sink with soapy water and an SOS scrub pad)

Laundry room:

  • Remove all items stacked on the floor of the laundry room and thoroughly sweep the floor making sure to get in between machines and behind machines if possible
  • Ensure that there are no loose garbage or recycling items around the room
  • Wipe down all cupboards and counters and place stray items in lost and found box or to their appropriate place
  • Wash laundry sinks thoroughly, including the wall behind the sinks
  • Wash the floor
  • Ensure that the room is neat and tidy

Clean garbage receptacles:

  • Remove garbage bags from all receptacles in the kitchen and bathrooms
  • Using warm water and cleanser wash down the garbage receptacles in the laundry room sink
  • Thoroughly dry garbage receptacles and replace with clean garbage bags

Bathroom counters:

  • Using warm water and cleaner, wipe down the walls in the bathroom
  • Using warm water and cleaner wipe down the counter and the inside of the cupboards
  • While doing this, ensure that all items in the cupboards are in their proper location and that there are no personal items being stored there

Garbage removal:

  • Remove all garbage bags from the back storage area and place out at the road for pick up
  • Ensure that there are no loose garbage items in the storage container Place all blue bags (full of recyclables) at the road for pick up

Laundry:

  • All students are responsible for the washing and drying of their clothing and bedding each week.
  • Every student will be assigned a laundry day and laundry supplies will be provided.
  • Staff will provide operating instructions for the use of the washing machines and dryers.
  • Please ensure that all articles of clothing are clearly marked with your name or initials.

Allowance:

  • Each student will earn a maximum of $2.50 each week to be paid out on Friday evening for snack.
  • This amount or any not spent on the evening of the pay out does not carry over to the following week as a running total.
  • Failure to complete weekly contributions may result in a loss of allowance.

Phone Calls:

  • There is a 15-minute time limit on all phone calls.
  • Phone calls will be scheduled each week at the same time.
  • If you cannot make your scheduled phone call, special arrangements may be made
  • Phone calls will be terminated by the Residential Staff if a student is swearing or disrespectful while on the phone.

Mail:

  • Correspondence – letters, email, faxes - from family and approved friends will be distributed to the students daily after supper and contributions have been completed and checked.
  • Packages and some mail shall be opened in the presence of a staff member

Internet Access:

  • Internet access is provided and encouraged for school projects and research.
  • Student's access to the Internet will be strictly controlled and supervised.
  • Personal e-mail accounts for students are not permitted.

Medical and dental care:

  • Medical and dental appointments should be scheduled during leaves when possible.
  • All medications, prescription and non-prescription, will be kept in a locked cabinet under the care of the Residential Staff.
  • We believe that a healthy lifestyle and diet will develop healthy individuals and medication should only be taken when necessary.

Sick day procedure:

  • Students are responsible for coming to inform the Staff when not feeling well
  • The student’s temperature will be taken to see if a “sick day” is needed
  • If a student is suffering from menstrual discomfort, staff will provide a hot compress
  • A student taking a “sick day” shall be in her room for the entire day and evening (even for meals), even if she is feeling better later in the day
  • The student will be expected to drink plenty of fluids, especially water
  • The student will not be permitted to socialize with roommates or peers during “sick day” or play computer games, etc
